What is Reiki?
Pronounced ‘Ray-Key’, it is a Japanese technique used to relieve stress and for relaxation.
Reiki is applied using the hands but it is a non-invasive therapy and does not involve any removal of clothing or actual bodily contact.
It is a spiritual therapy using natural unseen energy. There are unseen Chakras’ (energy centres) situated around the body which relate to specific areas and organs.
By using spiritual therapy on these Chakras, they balance the energy and the mechanics of your body.
Reiki can also be given from a distance, i.e. if you are in another street, town or even country, Reiki treatments can be given.
The seven key Chakras are:
- Crown Chakra (Sahastrara)

- Third Eye (Ajna)
- Throat (Vishudda)
- Heart (Anohata)
- Solar Plexus (Manipur)
- Sacral (Hara)
- Root (Muladhara)
The History of Reiki
Reiki is the formation of two Japanese words: Rei – meaning “Gods Wisdom” or “Higher Power”, and Ki – meaning “Life force Energy”. These put together give Reiki – meaning “Spiritual Life Force Energy”.
Reiki is one the most modern therapies around today. It originated inJapanand was started by Dr. Mikao Usui. This system of natural healing was devised as a result of travelling, researching and meditation by Dr. Usui.
Although Reiki is perceived to be a religious therapy, it is far from it. Dr Usui founded Reiki as a universal system to promote peace and harmony. His ethical ideals by which he believes people should live by are listed below:
The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work.
Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth:
Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind
The founder, Dr. Usui Mikao
It is believed that living by these ideals and practicing Reiki on a regular basis would allow people to create a balanced energy field within their body and around them. This in turn would reduce the chances of illness and states of dis-ease in our lives.
