The History of Indian Head Massage

Over the last 4000 years Indian Head Massage (known as Champissage for the last 1000) has played a key role in Indian families where they would use this massage for relaxation and healing on a daily basis.  It was also used to relieve accumulated tension, improve the condition of their hair and used with natural organic oils.

These techniques and massage were originally developed by women who used different oils according to the season.  There were many varied types of massages practiced by individual families, barbers and even at holiday resorts throughout India.

Indian Head Massage as we know it today has only been in the UK for the last 40 years.  It was brought to the UK by Mr Maeda who was in the UK for a vacation.  During his stay in London Mr Maeda went for a haircut and was disappointed as there was no after treatment of a massage

In his home in India Mr Maeda was used to having a head-massage as part if his visit to the barber’s.  Mr Maeda returned to the UK on several occasions to teach the techniques of head-massage which is formally known as Indian Head Massage.
